Denmark's Shipyard to Service Another Russian-Linked Tanker Despite Criticism

Denmark's Fayard shipyard is set to receive its third Russian-linked liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker this summer. The Boris Davydov, sailing under the Cypriot flag, anchored just north of the Odense Fjord on August 27.

The NGO Urgewald notes that the ship is part of a specialized fleet of Arc7 LNG icebreaking carriers shipping gas for Russia's Yamal LNG venture. Since it was last serviced at Fayard in September 2023, the ship has carried 50 cargoes of Russian Yamal LNG worth about $2.2 billion.

Fayard remains the only EU shipyard servicing this fleet, earning criticism from Ukraine, European lawmakers, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The shipyard is scheduled to represent Denmark at the Pavilion of Denmark at SMM Hamburg, a major maritime trade fair held in northern Germany between September 1 and 4.

Denmark's involvement with Fayard has raised questions about its commitment to stopping Russian LNG imports. In January 2027, the EU will impose a ban on Russian LNG due to its role in funding Russia's war efforts.
