Deutsche Bank: Markets Underestimating Central Bank Hawkish Risk
Deutsche Bank strategists have issued a warning about market dislocations that could trigger a sharp repricing across global equity and credit markets. The bank notes that commodity prices continue to push inflation higher, while markets still expect central banks to tighten monetary policy only to a limited degree. This growing disconnect has driven global yields to multi-year highs, yet markets are pricing in a relatively benign macro environment.
The report identifies turmoil in the Strait of Hormuz as a core risk source, with Brent Crude trading near $96 per barrel and European natural gas futures climbing to their highest levels since early 2023. Food prices have also posted notable gains in August, with sugar, wheat, and corn recording significant month-over-month increases.
However, futures markets are still pricing in expectations that energy prices will decline over the next 12 months. Deutsche Bank warns that if this expectation fails to materialize, it would create a severe market dislocation, with equities and credit assets facing direct downside shocks.
