Copper Prices Soar Amid Tariff Fears and AI Demand
Copper prices have reached an all-time high of $14,533 per ton on the London Metal Exchange (LME), a 17% increase over the last year. The surge in copper prices is attributed to expectations of President Donald Trump potentially expanding US tariffs to refined copper imports.
The anticipation of increased tariffs has led to traders shipping hundreds of thousands of tons of copper to the US, resulting in a global supply shortage and driving up prices. Another factor contributing to the shortage is the rising demand for AI data centers and chips, which require large amounts of copper for manufacturing.
Copper's essential role in chip production has led to a significant portion of the global supply being allocated to the growing AI industry, further exacerbating the shortage. Additionally, renewable energy and power grids are also driving up demand for copper, with old mines struggling to meet the ever-growing global demand.
However, there is a possibility that higher interest rates may lead to investors moving their capital to safe-haven assets like gold, potentially causing copper prices to drop. Conversely, if President Trump does not extend US tariffs to copper, the commodity may face a price correction soon.
