Diamondback Energy Rides Global Oil Supply Shock to Historic Production Heights
Diamondback Energy, Inc., an independent oil and gas company based in Midland, Texas, has responded to the largest supply shock in global oil market history by leveraging its inventory of drilled but uncompleted wells. The disruption of oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz led to a record 143 million barrel drawdown of global observed inventories in May, resulting in skyrocketing prices and volatility.
The company's quick addition of an extra completion crew allowed it to bring more barrels to market, generating significant cash flow and value for its shareholders. Diamondback expects the restocking required to rebuild global inventories has structurally raised the floor for oil prices compared to pre-conflict levels, although the timing of eventual supply normalization is uncertain.
The company's second quarter 2026 operational performance saw average production reach 525 million barrels of oil (MBO) per day, a 1% increase from Q1 and at the top end of its guidance range. Total production averaged 1,018 MBOE/d for the first time in the company's history, with Diamondback joining an exclusive 'million barrel' club.
