Diesel Costs Soar to $6.82 per Gallon as Indiana Harvest Begins

Indiana's fall harvest is underway, but farmers are facing a significant challenge in the form of soaring diesel costs. According to AAA data, diesel fuel across the state is averaging approximately $6.82 per gallon, a steep increase from last year's average of $3.78 per gallon.

This price jump comes at a critical time when combines, tractors, and grain transport trucks are running at peak intensity. Michael Langemeier, an agricultural economist at Purdue University's Center for Commercial Agriculture, notes that producers have seen broad increases in the overall cost of farm supplies.

Higher fuel prices alone have added roughly $11 per acre in operating expenses for corn production and $7 per acre for soybeans compared to last year. On a standard 2,000-acre operation, those incremental fuel costs can quickly translate into five-figure budget increases.
