Diesel Price Surge Signals Fresh Wave of Global Inflation

The global diesel market is experiencing a significant surge in prices, reaching record levels and signaling fresh waves of inflationary pressure worldwide. The average US diesel price has topped $6 a gallon for the first time in September, up from around $3.7 a year earlier, as distillate inventories, including diesel and heating oil, fell to seasonally low levels.

The supply crunch is becoming increasingly evident, with refineries operating near full capacity at 98%, the highest level since 2000. This has led to exceptional tightness in the diesel market relative to crude, with the US diesel crack spread topping $106 a barrel in early September, marking a record high and surpassing $100 a barrel for the first time.

The implications of this price surge are far-reaching, as higher diesel prices can quickly feed through to the real economy, raising trucking costs, goods transportation expenses, agricultural, construction, and logistics costs. These increased costs can ultimately be passed on to food, industrial, and retail prices, fueling inflation globally.

Chemical prices are also showing similar strains, with the ICIS Global Chemical Price Index (IPEX) rising about 41% since the start of the year, while prices on the US Gulf Coast have climbed 44%. This pressure is already being felt in inflation data, with inflation rising by about 0.4% in Japan through July, 1% in the US, and 1.6% in the euro area through August.
