Diesel Prices Hit Record High Amid Strait of Hormuz Disruption
The average price of diesel fuel has reached an all-time high of $6.43 per gallon, according to data from GasBuddy. This historic increase is largely due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have been a major concern since the U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran in February. The ongoing conflict has also led to an intensification of long-range Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil facilities, further exacerbating the crisis.
The sustained increase in diesel prices is causing concerns about rising costs across all sectors of the economy, from fuel and energy costs for drivers and homeowners to increased prices of food and travel.
Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh acknowledged that higher interest rates may help prevent price hikes from extending throughout the economy. However, he noted that elevated interest rates would not directly address the surge in fuel prices.
