Diesel Prices Reach Record Highs Amid Harsh Conditions for US Farmers
High diesel prices are hitting US farmers at the worst possible time as they prepare to harvest two of the nation's largest commodities: soybeans and corn. The national average price of diesel reached a record $5.85 per gallon on September 4, with prices rising even higher since then to an average of $6.05 per gallon on September 11, according to AAA.
Agricultural experts warn that the increase in diesel costs is just another blow to farmers who are already struggling with higher costs for fertilizer, seeds, and equipment this year. Jason Kurtz, a corn and soybean farmer in Missouri, said he's paying twice as much for diesel this year compared to previous years.
Kurtz explained that his combine uses 200 gallons of fuel per day, and he expects to run it for 30 days, which will significantly cut into his bottom line. He also needs diesel for a tractor and trucks, making the situation even more challenging.
