Diesel Prices Skyrocket, Fueling Farmers' Financial Burdens
Farmers are facing higher diesel prices as they gear up for harvest. According to Faith Parum, an economist with the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF), the national average price for on-highway diesel has reached $6.285 per gallon, a jump from $5.97 just a week prior and over $2.50 higher than last year.
Farm diesel prices have seen an even larger increase, climbing to $5.45 per gallon in September, compared to $3.02 per gallon at the same time last year. The high costs come at an inconvenient time for farmers, who are already facing tight margins and limited resources.
The price surge is attributed to several factors, including disruptions to global shipping routes and limited refining capacity in Russia. Crude oil prices have responded accordingly, with October West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures closing at $102.56 per barrel on September 16, a 14% increase from September 1.
