Diesel Prices Soar in Romania Amid Geopolitical Tensions
Standard diesel prices in Romania have hit an all-time high of RON 10.5 (approximately EUR 2) per liter, according to recent reports on July 31.
This surge is attributed to ongoing geopolitical tensions and disruptions in crude oil supply. Specifically, Kazakhstan's decision to suspend oil deliveries due to suspected Ukrainian drone attacks has significantly impacted Romania's energy market, which relies heavily on imports from the country.
The government is expected to implement a law reintroducing the state of crisis on the fuel market, allowing for a dynamic excise duty that would reduce prices gradually based on evolving market conditions. This mechanism could lead to a decrease of up to 20% in excise duty, potentially saving consumers around RON 0.68 per liter.
