Dollar Rises as Gold and Bitcoin Retreat Amid Inflation Fears
Gold and Bitcoin have been rising in tandem, but their recent behavior is not unusual. Historically, gold tends to climb when investors are fearful, while Bitcoin often benefits from bullish sentiment.
In August, gold rose above $4,600, and Bitcoin topped $80,000 for the first time since May. This coincided with investor concerns about inflation, government debt, and the long-term value of conventional currencies.
However, as the US dollar fights back against these concerns, gold has slipped towards $4,300, while Bitcoin has fallen below $77,000. The dollar's strength is attributed to rising oil prices and potential interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.
Andreas Anthis of Mashreq Capital notes that when confidence in a currency erodes, scarce assets are repriced upwards. Both gold and Bitcoin have been attracting money as investors seek to protect their wealth from inflation and government debt.
