Dollar Rises as Gold Prices Fall Amid Expectations of Higher Interest Rates
Gold prices have taken a hit this week, falling by 0.2% to $4260.40 an ounce. The decline comes as investors await the next move from the Federal Reserve, which is expected to keep interest rates higher for longer in its bid to combat inflation.
Two officials at the U.S. central bank have suggested that another rate hike may be necessary to curb inflation, a notion supported by new jobless claims data showing near-record lows of 57 years. This has led to a rise in the dollar, which is on track for weekly gains.
The euro and British pound are also feeling the pinch, falling to $1.1370 and $1.3220 respectively. Meanwhile, the yen stabilized around 158.8 against the dollar amidst speculation of potential intervention by Japanese authorities.
