Dollar Strength Sinks Gold Prices as Rate Hikes Loom
GOLD prices are declining this week, weighed down by a stronger US dollar and expectations of further interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. Spot gold is currently at $4,270.40 per ounce, a 0.2% drop from yesterday's price.
The dollar's gain makes greenback-priced metals more expensive for holders of other currencies, putting downward pressure on gold prices.
Two Fed policymakers have suggested that the central bank will likely need to raise rates again to combat inflation, with Philadelphia Fed President Anna Paulson stating that 'Returning inflation to 2 per cent is a top priority...'
Despite its traditional role as an inflation hedge, gold's demand can be curbed by higher interest rates, making yield-bearing assets more attractive.
