Dollar Surge Sends Silver Prices Plummeting Over 3%
Silver prices have taken a significant hit today, plummeting over 3% to $65.05 per ounce. This decline is part of a broader trend affecting precious metals, with platinum losing 3.7% to $1,767.73 and palladium declining by 3% to $1,268.84.
The main culprit behind this downward pressure is the strengthening US dollar, which has reached a two-month high. This makes greenback-priced bullion more expensive for investors holding other currencies.
Boston Fed President Susan Collins and Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin have signaled their support for last week's interest rate hike, citing growing concerns over inflation. As a result, the market is pricing in expectations of at least one more rate hike before the end of the year, putting gold under pressure according to Peter Grant, vice president and senior metals strategist at Zaner Metals.
While some Fed officials have raised red flags about inflation, driven by strong demand in the economy, the rise in interest rates is reducing the appeal of gold or silver as investors opt for interest-bearing assets instead. The fall in bullion prices can also be attributed to rising oil prices and fears of tighter monetary policy from central banks.
