Dollar Surges to Two-Month Peak as Iran Tensions Escalate Oil Prices
The US dollar surged to a two-month peak on Monday as tensions between Washington and Tehran escalated, sending crude oil prices skyrocketing. The greenback index remained steady at around 101.14, with expectations of a 1.7% gain for the month.
Brent crude contracts advanced more than 3% during Monday's session, pushing prices beyond $107 per barrel. This comes after President Trump's decision to walk away from proposed diplomatic arrangements with Iranian officials, which aimed to de-escalate regional tensions and restore normal shipping operations through the Strait of Hormuz.
The rally in crude markets has intensified concerns about energy availability, prompting market participants to anticipate a more aggressive monetary policy stance from the Federal Reserve. Longer-dated US government bond yields have continued their ascent, providing additional tailwinds for dollar strength.
