Doug Ford Stunned by Basic Fact About Ontario's Energy Supplies

Ontario Premier Doug Ford recently expressed surprise at learning that Canadian oil and natural gas travel down into the United States before coming back up into Ontario. He made this comment after speaking with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who has advocated for rerouting natural gas lines and building new pipeline capacity to reduce Canada's reliance on the US.

Ford seemed oblivious to the fact that a coast-to-coast pipeline called Energy East was already proposed nearly a decade ago before being cancelled in 2017. The project would have transported oil from Alberta to New Brunswick, but it fell through after Ottawa changed the rules of the National Energy Board's technical review process.

Lise Merle and Sheila Gunn Reid reacted to Ford's comment on their livestream show, questioning how he could not know this information before speaking with Smith. They noted that Smith has warned about the devastating effects of Ottawa cutting off or taxing Alberta's oil exports to the US, which would harm the Canadian economy.
