Drought Hits Wisconsin Farmers Hard
Farmers in Wisconsin are facing a challenging growing season due to weeks of drought. The dry spell has been particularly harsh on smaller harvests and local growers' incomes. For Adam Baumann, owner of Twin B Farms in Marathon City, the lack of moisture is costing him hundreds of dollars per bushel.
Baumann farms 500 acres of sweet corn, which typically sells to the public around this time of year. However, the drought has delayed harvesting as he waits for his corn to ripen before it can go to market.
The heavy sandy soil on Baumann's land means he relies on natural rainfall rather than irrigation, leaving him at the mercy of Mother Nature. With 35 days without substantial rain, Baumann estimates that his crop could be reduced by 50 bushels, resulting in a significant financial impact.
