Drought Risks Rise for England's Key Grain Regions

England's key grain-producing regions are facing increasing drought risks due to prolonged dry periods and water shortages. According to Rebalance Earth, a significant share of crops is already grown in areas classified as having moderate, high or very high drought risk.

The most vulnerable areas are East Anglia and Kent, which have historically been among the country's most important agricultural regions. These areas account for around 30% of wheat and barley production and 28% of oilseed rape.

Water shortages are already affecting crop performance, with yields of wheat, spring barley, and oats in 2026 below historical averages, according to AHDB.
