Durham's Craft Beer Scene Dries Up Amid Rising Costs and Changing Lifestyles

Durham's craft beer scene is facing unprecedented challenges as several long-time breweries close their doors. In January, Bull City Taproom shuttered its operations, followed by Flying Bull's Ninth Street Taproom in February. Proximity Brewing, the only Black-owned brewery in Durham, ceased operations in April. Durty Bull Brewing announced it will close in September after a decade in business.

The decline of the craft brewing industry is not unique to Durham. A 2025 report from the Brewers Association describes a nearly 10% decline in beer sales in North Carolina. High tariffs on metal, which affect packaging costs, and rising grain prices due to the war in Ukraine are major contributing factors. Joel Miles, co-owner of Flying Bull, noted that grain prices have increased from 62 cents per pound to over $1 per pound in just a few years.

But local economic changes also play a significant role. As Durham's housing market shifts, luxury condo residents have moved into the downtown area, driving up demand for higher-end cocktail bars and pushing breweries out of the picture. 'Breweries were a place where working-class people would come in for a beer,' said Matt Pennisi, owner of Durty Bull. 'Now, houses that were once $200,000 have been bought up.'

The impact on culture is multifaceted. A decreased interest in consuming alcohol and the rise of THC drinks are also contributing factors to the decline of breweries. Seth Gross, owner of Bull City Solera and Brewery, believes that the pendulum will eventually swing back in favor of craft brewers.
