Dutch Central Bank Relocates Gold Amid Rising Geopolitical Tensions
The Dutch central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), has relocated 86 tons of gold from New York to London as a precautionary measure against rising geopolitical tensions. The decision is part of DNB's risk diversification strategy, which involves spreading the country's gold reserves across different locations worldwide.
The relocation was carried out between March and August 2026, with approximately 59 tons of gold sold in New York and then bought back in London that meets international market standards. This approach saved on shipping costs, a significant consideration for such large transactions.
The Netherlands is caught between the US and China over chipmaking technology, particularly due to ASML's role as the sole manufacturer of lithography machines for complex microchips. The country's involvement in this sector puts it at odds with its biggest trading partner and security ally.
