Dutch Central Bank Relocates Gold from US and Canada Amid Geopolitical Unrest

The Dutch central bank has relocated 86 tons of gold from the United States and Canada to London, citing 'increasing geopolitical unrest' as the primary driver. The move is part of a broader trend where European countries are shifting their gold reserves away from American vaults due to growing concerns over global instability.

The relocation involved selling 59 tons of gold stored in New York and using the proceeds to buy gold in London that meets international market standards. Additionally, more than 27 tons of gold were physically moved from the U.S. and Canada to the bank's cash center in Zeist, with a similar amount simultaneously shifted from Zeist to London.

The move changes the geographic distribution of the Netherlands' overall gold holdings, but the total amount remains unchanged at 612.4 tons valued at roughly $83.6 billion at the end of last year. London now holds the largest share of Dutch reserves, up sharply from its previous level, while New York and Ottawa's shares have each fallen to about 19%, down from 31% held in New York alone before the transfer.

This move follows a similar action by France earlier this year, where the Bank of France sold 129 tons of French reserves held in New York, generating a capital profit and using the funds to purchase new gold now stored in Paris. The trend has drawn attention amid strained transatlantic relations during President Donald Trump's second term.
