East London Joins Richards Bay and Ngqura in South Africa's LNG Expansion Drive
The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has invited private operators to bid for the right to finance, build and operate a small-to-medium-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in East London, South Africa.
The project is part of South Africa's efforts to secure alternative gas supplies before an expected decline in production from 2028. The country currently relies heavily on gas imported by pipeline from Mozambique's Pande and Temane fields, which supply around 90% of its natural gas needs.
The East London terminal will be located on a greenfield site of about 8,900 square meters within the port's West Bank precinct. The successful bidder will design, finance, develop, construct, operate and maintain the terminal for 25 years before transferring it to TNPA when the concession expires.
