The Eastern Mediterranean region is strengthening its gas diversification efforts, driven by the need for alternative suppliers and infrastructure amid geopolitical disruptions.
Cyprus's gas fields could become an additional source of supply for the region, combining with Egypt's own production, Israeli pipeline gas, and imported liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Egypt is becoming increasingly dependent on Israeli gas and imported LNG due to a decline in its domestic gas production. The country produced 67.8 billion cubic meters of gas in 2021 but fell to 40.8 billion cubic meters by 2025, while consumption increased to 61.5 billion cubic meters.
The region's strategic value lies in its ability to quickly change suppliers, routes, infrastructure, and contract terms, as demonstrated during supply disruptions during conflicts.
