Ecopetrol and Petrobras Conclude $1 Billion Caribbean Gas Campaign
Colombia's Ecopetrol and Brazil's Petrobras have concluded their largest-ever natural gas exploration effort in the deep waters of the Colombian Caribbean, marking the completion of a $1 billion campaign. Spanning two and a half years, the initiative involved drilling five exploration wells and was carried out without any accidents or operational issues.
The project was led by Petrobras, which held a 44.4% stake, while Ecopetrol owned the remaining 55.6%. The exploration contract was established with Colombia's National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH). The campaign significantly advanced the understanding of the region's offshore gas potential, requiring extensive logistics, including over 1,000 helicopter flights and the transportation of millions of liters of fuel.
On August 3, the companies confirmed a new natural gas discovery in the deepwater Colombian Caribbean, adding to other major finds like Sirius and Copoazú. The campaign's primary goal was to boost Colombia's domestic natural gas supply. Petrobras managed the planning and execution, coordinating specialized geoscience, engineering, and maritime operations.
