Egypt Activates Backup Regas Plan After Damietta Drone Attack

Egypt's energy supply remains uninterrupted after a drone attack on a regasification vessel at Damietta Port. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly confirmed that the government activated backup plans to replace the affected unit, praising the swift and coordinated crisis response.

Madbouly stated that the fire caused by the drone took around 12 hours to extinguish, with authorities confirming the cause only after recovering drone debris from the vessel. The stricken regasification vessel was towed away from the port to prevent an explosion, while a nearby floating storage vessel remained unharmed.

With four operational floating regasification units (FSRUs), including three at Ain Sokhna and one at Damietta, Egypt's natural gas supplies are secure. An alternative regasification vessel contracted with Jordan was immediately activated to ensure uninterrupted energy supplies.

The prime minister emphasized that the government prioritized containing the fire and preventing a larger disaster, explaining why details of the incident were initially withheld. Investigations into the attack continue, with no party yet claiming responsibility.
