Egypt Supply Minister Reviews Bread Price Increase Request
Egypt's Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Dr. Sherif Farouk, has addressed the request from bakeries to raise the prices of tourist bread and Fino due to rising flour costs. The ministry has held multiple meetings with the General Bakery Division and other stakeholders to assess the impact of higher wheat prices on production inputs, particularly free-market flour.
Farouk stated that the General Bakery Division has formally requested a price increase to align with the rising costs of flour. The ministry is currently reviewing this request and conducting a thorough evaluation of production expenses to determine the actual increase in bread-making costs.
The minister emphasized that any decision regarding price adjustments will be based on a detailed assessment of all cost components and market developments. The goal is to balance production sustainability with the interests of citizens.
Previously, the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade had reiterated the enforcement of Ministerial Directive No. 5 of 2026, which regulates the prices and weights of tourist bread, foreign-style bread, and Fino bread. Bakeries are required to comply with these regulations, and violations may result in legal consequences, including imprisonment and financial fines.
