Egypt Surpasses Domestic Wheat Target Amid Efforts for Self-Sufficiency
Egypt has made significant strides in increasing its domestic wheat production, procuring 4.72 million metric tons from its 2026 harvest.
The harvest period ran from mid-April to mid-August, with government purchases rising from just under 4 million tons in 2025.
Although the latest figure remains below the government's 5 million-ton target, when combined with durum wheat and seed stock, total procurement exceeded the goal.
Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk has stated Egypt aims to reach self-sufficiency in wheat for subsidised bread by 2028.
