Egypt's Bread Price Policy Resilient Amid Rising Costs
Egypt's Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing unsubsidized bread prices, despite demands from bakers for a 15% increase.
The ministry met with representatives from the General Division of Bakeries for the second consecutive week to review flour availability, production costs, and market needs. The participants agreed to make wheat available regularly through the Egyptian Commodity Exchange for flour production sold on the open market, with quantities determined by market demands and needs.
The ministry's decision comes as flour prices have risen from EGP 17,000 to EGP 21,000 per ton, increasing production costs. The General Division of Bakeries had sought a review of official prices and loaf weights to reflect these higher costs.
