Egypt's Wheat Imports Surge Amid Black Sea Disruptions
The Egyptian Ministry of Supply reports that Egypt's wheat imports have increased by 21% for the first eight months of 2026, reaching a total of 8.18 million tons.
This growth was heavily front-loaded before the July crisis, as importers hedged against worsening regional geopolitical risks.
However, severe bottlenecks in importing Russian and Ukrainian wheat led to a sharp decline in arrivals, with only around 480,000 tons arriving in July and August, down from 1.95 million tons during the same period last year.
The sudden slump has triggered a surge in local flour prices, straining private bakers and threatening higher costs for daily staples such as bread and pasta.
