EIA and IEA Reports Set to Shape Energy Market Outlook
This week's energy market reports from the EIA and IEA are highly anticipated as Brent crude and natural gas prices hold steady above their 200-day moving averages.
The EIA's Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) update will provide new oil and natural-gas price forecasts for this year and next, including a prediction of an average $82 per barrel in 2026 and $65 per barrel in 2027 for Brent crude. However, futures markets are pricing a higher average price for 2027 at around $75 per barrel, indicating a divergence from the EIA's estimate.
In contrast to Brent crude, Henry Hub natural gas prices are trading at a discount against EIA forecasts of $3.64/MMBtu in 2026 and $3.49/MMBtu in 2027. Record domestic production and elevated inventories have put pressure on prices, but the possibility of increased LNG exports due to arbitrage opportunities may help reduce the domestic supply surplus.
The IEA's Oil Market Report (OMR) will also be closely watched for its estimates on global crude inventories, which are expected to remain tight due to historically low OECD strategic reserves and commercial inventories. A persistent shortage of buffers leaves the market vulnerable to fresh supply disruptions, particularly around key chokepoints in the Middle East.
