El Niño Brings Volatility to Agricultural Markets

Instruments
Corn
Share

Agricultural commodities are gaining attention as weather, harvest conditions, and supply constraints impact key crops. US cocoa futures have surged more than 40% above their mid-June low, while coffee is about 30% above early-June levels.

Sugar has also accelerated from around 15.3 cents per pound in early August, with cotton and corn moving higher from late-July levels. However, the market for each crop has its own unique drivers and price triggers, rather than being a single broad complex.

Coffee is supported by concerns over Brazilian harvest conditions and low exchange inventories, while cocoa remains highly sensitive to supply disruptions in West Africa. Sugar's price is linked not only to weather but also to the decision of Brazilian mills on how much cane to direct toward sugar or ethanol production.
