El Niño Sets New Record, Global Weather Patterns at Risk
The current El Niño event in the Pacific Ocean has exceeded all previous records, making it the strongest on instrument record.
According to the UK Met Office, sea surface temperatures in the central equatorial Pacific have surpassed those recorded during previous events.
This phenomenon is expected to peak later this year and could have a significant impact on weather conditions worldwide.
Australia, India, and southern Africa typically face higher risks of dry conditions during El Niño events, while some areas in South America, the Mediterranean, and East Africa may receive more rainfall.
However, the impact of El Niño on crop yields is not uniform. A previous strong El Niño event in 2015-2016 led to significant losses in corn yields in Southern Africa and wheat losses in India.
