El Niño Strengthens to Historic Levels, Wreaking Havoc on US Agriculture
A powerful El Niño event is gaining strength and has a 75% chance of becoming historic, according to US climate forecasters. As of September 10th, sea-surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific region are already 1.8°C above normal, with the potential to exceed 2.5°C.
This could lead to significant changes in winter rainfall and temperature patterns for US agriculture, including increased flood risks in California, altered crop conditions, and disruptions to transportation networks and commodity markets.
The event has already worsened drought conditions in Central America, contributing to low water levels that have constrained Panama Canal traffic. Additionally, wildfires in Indonesia have put pressure on palm oil markets.
