El Nino Threatens Latin America's Food Exports Amidst Disruption of Energy Supplies and Trade

Latin America is bracing for the impact of a powerful El Nino weather phenomenon that could disrupt food production, energy supplies, river transport, and trade in one of the world's most important food-exporting regions. Researchers expect the weather pattern to strengthen from September, potentially reaching or exceeding the intensity of the 2015-16 El Nino, which remains the strongest on record.

The effects of El Nino vary by location, with southern parts of the continent often receiving more rain and northern areas facing higher drought risks. While farmers in some areas may benefit from better soil moisture, excessive rain, floods, disease, and damaged transport links could reduce the benefits.

In Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southern Brazil, above-normal rainfall is expected to support crop production, particularly for soybeans, corn, and wheat during the December-to-February summer season. However, this can also lead to increased fungal diseases, nutrient washout, and higher costs for farmers to protect their crops.

The impact of El Nino will not be limited to agriculture; it could also affect energy supplies, river transport, and international trade. Argentina may benefit from changing energy demand due to hotter and drier conditions in northern and western Brazil, which could increase demand for Argentine natural gas. However, southern Brazil and northeastern Argentina may face the opposite situation, with higher rainfall potentially increasing water levels in the Parana River and improving hydroelectric dam usage.
