El Niño's Impact on US Agriculture Intensifies as NOAA Forecasts Record-Breaking Event
A rapidly intensifying El Niño is emerging as a significant risk factor for U.S. agriculture heading into 2027, according to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center.
The forecast indicates a 75% probability that the Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI) will reach at least +2.5°C during October-December 2026, surpassing every event in the record since 1950.
While a historic El Niño does not automatically translate to crop losses, its expected timing shifts attention towards winter wheat, soil moisture, snowpack, water availability, forage and livestock conditions, with potential carryover into spring fieldwork and the 2027 planting season.
