El Teniente Mine Seismic Risks Spark Global Copper Supply Concerns
Codelco's flagship El Teniente mine is facing production challenges due to a decision to suspend development of the Andes Norte section. The pause in expansion could last up to two years, according to a union leader.
The decision was made after six months of analysis revealed an emerging seismic phenomenon associated with the greater depth of the project. This new risk is different from those historically known and managed at the operation.
The El Teniente mine is adjacent to areas where a rockburst in July 2025 killed six workers and halted production. The collapse remains under investigation.
Codelco's decision adds to concerns over global copper supply, as miners push deeper underground and expose themselves to geotechnical risks.
