Electric Motorcycles Gain Popularity Amid Rising Fuel Prices

The ongoing war in Iran and resulting energy shortages have driven up oil and gas prices worldwide. This has disproportionately affected low-income countries, where motorcycles are a common mode of transportation due to congested cities. In Pakistan, for instance, motorbikes account for around 80% of vehicles on the road. E-motorcycles were rarely seen just a few years ago but have gained significant popularity lately.

The trend is largely driven by the increasing cost of fuel, making electric two-wheelers a more attractive option. In Pakistan, e-motorcycle sales rose by 173% in the first half of the year, according to market-intelligence firm Motorcycles Data. Government subsidies have also contributed to the growth.

Many Chinese companies are entering the Pakistani market with affordable EVs, and local startups backed by venture capital are emerging as well. In Vietnam, VinFast saw record e-motorcycle order volumes in the first quarter of 2026, up 219% from the same period in 2025.

Honda Motor has announced plans to begin production of its UC3 electric motorcycle in Vietnam this year and is developing a production facility in Phu Tho. The company's general director, Sayaka Arai, stated that higher fuel prices have accelerated consumer interest in electric scooters and motorcycles.
