Energy Security Concerns Drive Renewables Boom in Europe and Asia
The recent US/Israel-Iran war has triggered significant energy security concerns in Europe and Asia, prompting countries to prioritize investments in renewable energy, storage, and electrification.
Natural gas prices surged from €31.96 per megawatt-hour on February 27 to a peak of €80.82 per megawatt-hour on September 11, while Brent crude oil rose from $76.30 per barrel on the same day to as high as $126.41 on April 30.
In response, European countries have accelerated their clean energy transition, which is expected to reduce their dependence on imported fossil fuels and strengthen economic resilience against global energy shocks.
The International Energy Agency notes that countries have increased renewable energy capacity and improved energy efficiency in response to the war's impact on energy markets.
