Equinor and Aker BP Strike North Sea Gas Discovery Amid European Supply Crunch
Norwegian oil and gas firms Equinor and Aker BP have made a significant gas and condensate discovery in the North Sea, according to the Norwegian Offshore Directorate. The well was drilled approximately 16 kilometers northwest of the Balder field, which is already operational.
Preliminary estimates indicate that the size of the discovery is between 0.1 and 2.1 million standard cubic meters (Sm3) of recoverable oil equivalent. This finding has sparked interest in further exploration potential within the production license.
The Norwegian Continental Shelf producers, including Equinor and Aker BP, are prioritizing drilling and development near existing infrastructure to accelerate new project tie-backs to operational platforms. Norway aims to maintain its high level of oil and gas production for at least another decade, as the country has become a significant supplier of gas to Europe following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
