Equinor: Europe Faces Imminent Gas Shortage as Winter Approaches
Europe is facing a potentially catastrophic gas shortage as winter approaches, according to Equinor's CEO Anders Oppedal. The continent's largest natural gas supplier has stated that it does not believe Europe will be able to fill its reserves to 80% by the beginning of winter.
The current fill level stands at 54%, which is significantly lower than the average for the last five years and the second lowest level in the last 15 years. This situation makes Europe more vulnerable to market price fluctuations this winter, Oppedal warned.
One of the main reasons for the shortage is the redirection of LNG supplies from Asia, where buyers are offering higher prices. This has led to a significant portion of the gas meant for Europe being redirected to Asia instead.
