The recent conflict between Iran and the US-Israeli alliance has created new opportunities for energy companies. For Equinor, the Norwegian oil giant, this means reviving a long-stalled liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Tanzania.

The Tanzanian LNG export plant, which would unlock 47.13-trillion cubic feet of natural gas deposits, has been stuck in years of negotiations between Equinor and the Tanzanian government. With the Middle East's reputation as a reliable energy supplier now tarnished due to Iran's attacks on export plants and shipments, Equinor believes the time is right to move forward with the project.

'You don't want to wait too long to put new LNG volumes on the market,' said Philippe Mathieu, Equinor's head of international operations. 'Maybe now is a good time to get on with it.' The project would cost around $42 billion to develop and provide an alternative source of supply for Asian customers.

The Tanzania LNG project has been in the works since its discovery over a decade ago. However, hopes for a breakthrough have been dashed several times. With the current geopolitical situation making Middle Eastern energy supplies less reliable, Equinor is now considering the Tanzanian option more seriously.
