Escondida Shutdown Boosts Copper Prices for Sandfire Resources
The world's largest copper mine, Escondida in Chile, has been shut down following a fatal accident that killed a contractor during maintenance work. The incident occurred on Wednesday and all operational activities at the site have stopped, with no restart date announced.
The suspension of operations is significant, as Escondida ships a large share of global copper concentrate. However, despite the supply shock, copper prices did not rally, instead easing from near-record levels due to a stronger US dollar and sticky inflation.
Sandfire Resources (ASX:SFR), an Australian-listed copper producer, has benefited indirectly from the Escondida shutdown. As a supplier of copper concentrate, zinc, and lead from Spain and Botswana, Sandfire's prices may increase as smelters compete harder for feed in the absence of the giant Escondida mine.
