Essex Farmers Warn of Food Security Crisis as Drought Costs £370m

Farmers in Essex are sounding the alarm about the devastating impact of drought and rising production costs on their industry. According to estimates, this summer's heatwave could cost UK wheat growers £370 million.

The National Farmers' Union (NFU) is warning that Britain is becoming increasingly reliant on imported food as domestic production falls. In fact, NFU research shows that production of staples like wheat, vegetables, beef, and poultry has declined over the past 30 years, while imports have risen by 70%.

NFU President Tom Bradshaw emphasized the importance of increasing domestic food production to mitigate the risks of global instability. He pointed out that recent events, such as the war in Ukraine and droughts in Europe and North America, have disrupted supply chains and highlighted the need for a more robust domestic food system.
