Estonia Blocks Transit of Russian, Belarusian Grain Amid Ukraine War
Estonia has banned the transit of grain originating from Russia and Belarus through its territory in an effort to prevent shipments being redirected to Estonian ports amidst the war in Ukraine.
The measure, which is preventive in nature, aims to stop grain exports from these countries from entering Baltic ports via Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania. The European Union introduced customs duties on grain products from Russia and Belarus in 2024, but this did not entirely eliminate the possibility of transit to third countries.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna announced the decision on X platform, accusing Russia of attacking Ukrainian ports while seeking new routes for its own exports. He stated that Estonia seeks to prevent grain from these two states from being transported through Estonia and contributing to financing Russia's war.
