Ethanol, EVs Must Coexist in India's Clean Mobility Transition
India's transition to cleaner mobility should involve both ethanol and electric vehicles (EVs), not be seen as mutually exclusive technologies, according to the Indian Federation of Green Energy (IFGE).
The organization notes that nearly 300 million internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles remain on the country's roads, necessitating a diversified energy strategy.
IFGE Regional Director Dilip Patil emphasized that E20 provides an immediate pathway to reduce crude oil dependence and strengthen energy security while EVs, hybrids, and other technologies continue to scale.
A 2-6% reduction in fuel efficiency with E20 compared to E10 was observed by studies from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Indian Oil, and the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). However, newer vehicles increasingly use ethanol-compatible materials.
