EU Countries Push for Oil Companies' Excess Profit Tax Amid Soaring Profits

Six European Union countries are pushing for an excess profit tax on oil companies after their profits soared due to the war in the Middle East. The finance ministers of Germany, Italy, Austria, Poland, and Portugal, along with the Spanish economy minister, sent a letter to the finance minister of Ireland, whose country is holding the rotating presidency of the European Union.

The countries asked that the tax be included in the agenda of the meeting of EU finance ministers next month in Dublin. They assessed that oil companies enjoyed profits and margins on processed products that exceeded the increase in crude oil prices.

Excess profit tax is a levy on extra profits earned by companies during a crisis. The signatories of the letter ask for discussion on the EU framework for taxing excess profits, citing the experience from the temporary levy applied in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine.
