EU Demands Russia End Attacks on Ukrainian Grain Exports

The European Union is urging Russia to cease attacks on Ukrainian grain exports in the Black Sea, warning of global food insecurity.

Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, spoke at a UN General Assembly event on September 21. She emphasized that Ukraine's agricultural exports are crucial for feeding people worldwide.

Ukraine is one of the world's most important agricultural exporters, accounting for 15% of global maize exports, 10% of wheat exports, 15-20% of barley exports, and around 50% of sunflower oil exports. Almost 90% of these products are transported through the Black Sea corridor.

The EU is calling on Russia to stop its attacks and allow grain to flow again. Kallas stressed that 'food must never be used as a weapon of war.'
