EU Denies Ukraine's Request for Wheat Import Quota Increase
The European Commission has denied Ukraine's request to increase its wheat import quotas.
The current quota of approximately 1.3 million metric tons has already been fully exhausted, making it economically unviable for Ukrainian suppliers to ship wheat directly to the EU under standard terms.
The out-of-quota tariff is a significant 95 euros per metric ton, which further complicates direct shipments.
However, Ukrainian exporters can take advantage of a separate EU general quota for third countries under World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. This quota has a volume of 2.3 million metric tons and remains largely unused.
The tariff on shipments under this general quota is significantly lower at 12 euros per metric ton, making it a partial compensation mechanism for exports that were typically directed to other foreign markets.
