EU Energy Policy Complicated by Rise in Russian LNG Imports

Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports into Europe are on the rise due to the ongoing Middle East crisis, defying EU plans to phase out Russian LNG entirely next year. According to data from Bloomberg, shipments from Russia became Belgium's sole supplier of LNG in July, replacing imports from other countries that ceased amid the war.

Belgium's total LNG imports in July were more than 40% lower than a year earlier, with around 0.4 million metric tons coming from Russia. The country had previously received pipeline gas from Norway and Britain, but Russian shipments have completely replaced imports from other sources.

The situation complicates the European Union's energy policy, which aims to phase out Russian LNG next year. A ban on short-term contracts has been in force since April, and EU countries are already required to reduce purchases. However, disruptions to supplies from the Middle East have driven an increase in imports from Russia.

Russia remains the European Union's second-largest LNG supplier after the United States. Industry representatives are questioning whether a complete ban will be possible if the Middle East crisis continues. The EU has granted an exemption allowing Russian LNG to be transported to third countries, reducing risks to global supplies.
