EU Faces 'Exceptionally Low' Gas Reserves Ahead of Winter
The European Union is facing a challenging winter season as it struggles to replenish its natural gas reserves. According to Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen, gas reserves remain 'exceptionally low' after a hot and dry summer, forcing countries to use more gas for electricity production.
The extreme weather has reduced the amount of gas available for storage in underground reserves, while the global gas market continues to be impacted by the US-Iran conflict. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) flows have fallen to only 15-25% of pre-Iran conflict levels, with Qatar announcing an extension of its force majeure status on LNG shipments.
The EU is racing to replenish gas reserves before winter, but the question remains how to increase stocks without accepting excessively high prices. The European Commission has allowed countries more flexibility in meeting minimum reserve requirements, reducing the filling target to 80% to alleviate immediate pressure on prices and costs.
